McDonald\u2019s<\/strong>, in full\u00a0McDonald\u2019s Corporation<\/strong>, American\u00a0<\/span>fast-food\u00a0chain that is one of the largest in the world, known for its\u00a0<\/span>hamburgers,\u00a0french fries, and especially Big Macs. It is one of the most successful\u00a0brands\u00a0in marketing history. Company headquarters are in\u00a0Chicago.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

The first McDonald\u2019s\u00a0restaurant\u00a0was opened in 1940 by brothers\u00a0<\/span>Maurice\u00a0(\u201cMac\u201d) and\u00a0<\/span>Richard McDonald in\u00a0San Bernardino,\u00a0California. It originally was a drive-in that offered a wide selection of items. However, in 1948 the brothers decided to revamp the business, and after a three-month renovation, a newly\u00a0envisioned\u00a0McDonald\u2019s opened. The small restaurant was designed to produce huge quantities of food at low prices. To achieve this, the brothers limited the menu\u2014which only featured hamburgers, potato chips (later replaced by french fries), drinks, and pie\u2014and developed a simple, efficient format that they named the Speedee Service System. This included a self-service counter that eliminated the need for waiters and waitresses, and customers received their food quickly because hamburgers were cooked ahead of time, wrapped, and warmed under heat lamps. These\u00a0innovations\u00a0allowed the brothers to charge just 15 cents for a basic\u00a0hamburger, about half the price of competing restaurants. McDonald\u2019s was a huge success, and the brothers began a\u00a0<\/span>franchise\u00a0program.<\/p>\n

Appliances for McDonald\u2019s were purchased from a salesman named\u00a0<\/span>Ray Kroc, who was intrigued by their need for eight malt and shake mixers. In 1954 he visited the restaurant to see how a small shop could sell so many\u00a0milk\u00a0shakes. Realizing there was great promise in their restaurant concept, Kroc became a franchise agent for the brothers. In April 1955 Kroc launched McDonald\u2019s Systems, Inc., later known as McDonald\u2019s Corporation, in\u00a0Des Plaines,\u00a0Illinois, and there he also opened the first McDonald\u2019s franchise east of the\u00a0Mississippi River. In 1961 Kroc bought out the McDonald brothers.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
